Learning the Language of the Drum

By NICOLE COTRONEO,RIVERHEAD

A YOUNG man with a head of honey-brown curls bounces his right hand off a hand drum held steady with his legs. “Gun!” he says forcefully, pronouncing it as “goon.”

Repeating the motion with his left hand, he says, “Dun!”

Only minutes into Talking Drum, an African drumming class at the East End Arts Council on East Main Street, the meaning of the course’s name reveals itself. The instructor, Daniel Bailey, 24, is teaching his students a language: a verbal expression of the sounds made by the djembe (pronounced JEM-bay), an African drum, when it is properly played.
